sunset through the smoke

Updated: Jan 23, 2022

It’s been a while since I shared what’s on my heart. And to be honest, it’s because I have been having a few really emotionally overwhelming days, let’s make that weeks. And I have really struggled to express the mess between my heart and mind.

Yesterday, a few people close to my heart reminded me that I started a blog, and they were anticipating some inspiration. Some of those people even got me the most beautiful white protea, that I get to look at as I write this.

So here it goes…

I realised the other day that as we go into winter, that we're in the season of veld fires. I really struggle with allergies, so there is nothing nice about veld fires, and I’m sure no one else genuinely likes them [feel free to comment if you disagree].

As I was driving home today I caught the sunset, but there was a massive veld fire and tons of smoke in the air; and the way that the smoke caught the light, was captivating.

Have you ever noticed the sunset through the smoke?

If you don’t know this about me, I love sunrises and sunsets; I love that God creates magic in the sky and paints a different picture every day. For me it is a reminder that that no matter what happens in the day, that if God prioritises the exact time for the sun to rise and the sun to set and He makes a big deal of it [when there are no clouds, obviously] then I can be hopeful that God is going to create something beautiful with my life, at the exact time that He has planned.

But something I have noticed, is that the sunset seems to be even more stunning when there is smoke in the sky. Just like light being scattered in haze, the smoke is only visible because of the light. I recently learnt that optical haze can either have reflection or transmission qualities [and that’s exactly what happens to the light when it hits the smoke].

And I love that analogy, if we think of ourselves as the smoke or haze in life we get to reflect the light from the Son.

Who am I reflecting? Am I reflecting light? And what light am I reflecting? Jesus says that He is the Light [John 8:12]. If I want to reflect Light, then I need to be close to the Source so that those colours can be seen.

Just as the smoke reflects the colours from the suns rays, we reflect the colours of God, and the brightest colour of God is love. Are we reflecting love? Are we reflecting His light? In a world so broken and filled with hate, lets choose love.

I hope that you notice the sunset through the smoke and that you are reminded to reflect love!
