Have you ever taken a moment just to think about salt?
[Oh, just me… well let me share some thoughts with you about salt]
Have you ever been cooking, something like rice or pasta, and someone else [typically a much more experienced cook - this for me would have been, my mom] would walk into the kitchen, take a moment to see what is in the pot on the stove and then very kindly ask; “did you add the salt?”
I watched a documentary about harvesting sea salt and one of the most fascinating statements that they made is that salt not only adds flavour to food, but salt brings out the flavour in food.
This reminded me of a sermon that Jesus preached to a large crowd of people who gathered to listen to Him. He said, “Your lives are like salt among the people.”
Another version of the Bible says it like this,
Matthew 5:13 The Message
Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavours of this earth.
In other words, the reason you woke up today is to bring out the best in others.
We can often seek our purpose and value in our career, productivity, or even in pleasing people. But Jesus is so clear about our purpose.
For any person who is constantly thinking, why am I here?
You are here to be salt! You are here to bring out the best in others.
If all you do today is bring out the best in someone, then you have fulfilled your purpose. but how do we bring out the best in someone?
Lately, I have been getting the most random compliments from the most random people. But what I love is that those people have had the courage to encourage me and in some moments that has meant more to me, than they will ever know.
Bringing out the best in others, is about noticing the good in others.
Bringing out the best in others, is about acknowledging the good in others.
Bringing out the best in others, is about responding to the good in others.
How often do you say that compliment, share that encouragement or send that ‘thinking of you’ message?
When we believe in others, others believe in themselves.
Next time you’re cooking and someone asks, did you add the salt, let it be a reminder to continue bringing out the best in others.
So, did you add the salt?
